  Registration, Sessions, and Lunches

Registration and all sessions will be held in Shepard Hall room 95 at The City College of New York (CCNY). This hybrid area map and satellite photograph provides you with a panoramic view of CCNY. Shepard Hall is the curved building to the right of the green arrow. Lunch will be served in the Amsterdam Room of the North Academic Center (which is to the left of the words "Convent Ave" on the hybrid area map and satellite photograph

On the campus map, Shepard Hall is the building with "SH" on it while the North Academic Center is indicated by an "NA" on it. Once you get on campus, you may ask any campus guard for directions to Shepard Hall if you are unsure. The CCNY campus is not very large so it should be easy to find Shepard Hall.

Wireless access to the internet will be available in Shepard Hall. Participants will be able to leave their property in Shepard Hall room 95 during the lunch breaks. Any property left in Shepard Hall room 95 at the end of each day will not be retrievable until the next morning.

Please Note: There is no food or beverages allowed inside Shepard Hall room 95. We kindly ask all participants to consume all your beverages and snacks outside of the room where the talks are held.

  Getting to CCNY

The best way to get around Manhattan and, therefore, to CCNY is to make use of the subway (or train as it is also commonly called). You may also take a bus or drive to the CCNY campus. These detailed directions provide you with the best options. If you are staying at any of the recommended hotels or at any hotel below 130th Street, you will want to take your chosen subway line uptown and when you leave the symposium each afternoon you will want to take your chosen subway line downtown. Please be careful to get on a train that is traveling in the right direction. Most entrances to the subway will indicate if you can catch trains going uptown or downtown. If no indication is given, then you are likely to catch a train in either direction. Entrances to subway ramps inside each station also indicate the direction the trains are running. If an entrance indicates either uptown or downtown, then the entrance to the train in the opposite direction is likely to be across the street.

On the subway map, the closest stations to the CCNY campus are the 137th St. — City College Station (serviced by Line 1) and the 145th St. Station (serviced by Lines A, B, C, and D). These stations are marked on the hybrid area map and satellite photograph From the 137th Street Station walk "up the hill" to Amsterdam Avenue, walk left to West 140th St., and walk right to Convent Avenue. After walking across Convent Avenue Shepard Hall is the building on the right. From the 145th St. Station, walk "up the hill" to Convent Avenue and walk left to West 140th St. After crossing West 140th St., Shepard Hall is the building to your left. Information about all subway lines can guide you as to where transfers between subway lines can be made.

Each time you get on the subway it will cost you US$2.00 regardless of how far or how long you travel. The best way to pay for the subway is by buying a MetroCard for the amount of money you wish (a minimum of US$4.00 and a maximum of US$80.00). MetroCards are sold at most subway stations. The details about fares and Metrocards indicate how buying a metro card for US$10.00 or more provide you with a 20 percent bonus.

Taxis are easily obtained anywhere Manhattan, but are much more expensive than the subway over long distances. Over short distances when more than one person rides in the taxi fares can be competitive with the subway. Taking a taxi from Times Square to CCNY will easily run you over US$30.00. If you choose to take a taxi to CCNY, tell the driver to take you to Convent Avenue and 138th Street.

If you are driving to CCNY, you may be interested in parking garages near the CCNY campus (towards the bottom of the page).

  NYC Tour

The tour of upper and lower Manhattan is scheduled from 2:30-6:30 p.m. on April 3, 2007. At 2:30 p.m. there will be two buses outside Shepard Hall on Convent Avenue waiting to pick-up TFP 2007 participants and their registered guests. Buses are not allowed to park on Convent Avenue for a long period of time and, therefore, it will be necessary for everyone to board the buses as close to 2:30 p.m. as possible. The bus tour, time permitting, will include 3 stops: 30 minutes at The Cathedral of St. John The Divine (each participant is free to make his or her own donation for visiting the cathedral), 15 minutes at Grant's Tomb, and 15 minutes at Ground Zero. The tour buses will drop-off all participants in Little Italy close to La Mela Ristorante Italiano where the symposium's dinner will be celebrated. Participants will be responsible for finding their own way back by subway, bus, taxi, car, or foot.

  Symposium Dinner

The symposium dinner is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. and may run as late as 11:30 p.m. (i.e. a maximum of 4 hours) at La Mela Ristorante Italiano located at 167 Mulberry Street (Telephone: 1-212-431-9493). Participants may feel free to arrive a little early if they so desire. There will be a TFP 2007 sign on one of the doors of La Mela indicating the entrance participants should use. The symposium's dinner will take place in La Mela's "Garden Room."

The family-style menu will consist of:

  • Baked Clams and Fried Calamari
  • Fresh Mozzarella and Tomatoes
  • Hot Antipasti (vegetarian friendly)
  • Assorted Pasta Dishes (vegetarian friendly)
  • Family-style Meat Dishes (chicken, shrimp, and veal; eggplant parmigiana for vegetarians)
  • Mixed desserts (tartufo, tiramisu, cheesecake, zappaglione, and cannoli)

In addition, an unlimited amount of non-alcoholic beverages, beer, and wine are included as part of the dinner. Participants do not need to leave a tip for the waiters, but you may do so if you desire. Tips and taxes were factored into the cost of each dinner ticket.
